Feedback The following feedback is in response to "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (October 7, 2009)" winniekay says, "YES--Shannon, you go girl. This newsletter should be engraved and hung for ALL to see. I am a newbie and I remember my excitement and fear when I received my first review. Thankfully it was from a very kind member who encouraged me and guided me through my first weeks here. I will never forget him. I most definitely agree that ALL ratings should be accompanied by a review." Thank you, Winnie! I'm glad you liked it. coolhand says, "This was one of the best Newbie Newsletters I've ever read, Shannon. Yes, I'm one of those who still subscribe. I love reading newbies. And I will never forget the first review I received--thanks Web Witch." Thank you so much, Coolhand! You are too kind. iamwhoiam says, "That was a wonderful newsletter! I'm sure a lot of people around here can relate. A few of my friends told me about people like this too. And what makes it even worse--the cowards would send the review anonymously. lajkd says, "Shannon, you are absolutely correct about the power of reviews. I must admit to rating without reviews when I first joined WDC. I thought I was too inexperienced to offer advice, and basically chickened out. Now I recognize the importance of feedback. I offer the best advice I can and hope that it provides help to the author." When I was a newbie, I didn't think I was qualified to review either, so I just avoided it altogether for a while (I didn't rate OR review). But I realized that reviewing other people's work made ME a better writer, too. Thank you for the feedback, Phoenix! garmatex says, "Really a eye opening news letter. It captured all the elements required for a reviewer." Thank you! acme says, "Well said, Shannon. heftynicki says, "Great newsletter, Shannon. I think many hurtful reviews are the ones where the reviewer simply didn't pay attention to the way their words would sound scrolling across the computer screen. Sometimes I type my thought, then reread it and decide the person may 'hear' a negative tone that I didn't mean to convey. I notice this happens most often when I'm reviewing in a rush. We have to be concientious readers (of our own words) as well as writers when it comes to relaying our feedback. I love your advice: Don't send something in a tone you wouldn't want in your own inbox. sybaritescribe says, "Great newsletter, Shannon. And great advice for everyone. I received my first review about three weeks after joining WDC. This lady was so positive and encouraging to this newbie, I had to do the same for others ... and have been reviewing ever since." Thanks, Jace! general6944 says, "Well done, dear Shannon! What an exemplary newsletter. It should be required reading for all newbies as they join the site. As for the members who have been here sometime--it should be required reading on a monthly basis! And I do include myself in that statement. Thank you for your inspiring words!" Aw, thank you, Gen! I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment. thunderspeech says, "Great job on this newslewtter, and absolutely right in principle. However, I don't 'rate and run' when I don't give a review. Sometimes I don't have time to write a review, but I want the writer to know the piece has been read and enjoyed. (I've never given a rating like that below 4.0) The principle behind the newsletter still holds true, and it was very well-said." I've done that too, and I think those are fine. At least the writer knows the reader connected on some level with the piece. I was referring to those one or two-star ratings not accompanied by any kind of feedback whatsoever or the one or two-star reviews sent anonymously. I think if you're going to rate/review someone else's writing that low, you should at least have the decency to tell them why. Without a little direction, the rating means nothing: without a review, the writer has no idea where to start making improvements. Thank you so much for the feedback, Walter! Your comments are spot-on./c} Submitted Items
