Preparation is essential for any writing and this can be said for both Contests & Activities. Take time to think over exactly what you are doing and what you hope to achieve. Pick up a pen and notebook and draft out how you would layout your item in sketch. Once this has been done start creating your Message board/In and Out. Remember to Save and Edit your piece and make the item For Your Eyes Only. Presentation. Now that you have made your item for private showing only you can concentrate on the presentation. Click through the ML's to take look at the choice of colouring, smilies etc and start playing about with them. Take time over what you are doing, it may take a couple of weeks but just think how stylish it will look. This would certainly make people look twice and the entries will soon come flooding in. Anticipation. The anticipation can be killing for both the Contest host and the entrant. It can also be annoying when after all your hard work there is no entries. This is where the Contest NL comes into the fore. At the bottom of the Newsletter there is a submission field where you can plug your items to all the editors. The Newsletters are read by thousands of authors and they are all hunting for that one elusive contest. There will be times when you feel like deleting the whole thing (I know because I quite often feel like this) but keep up with it. The entrant will also feel the same waiting for their entry to be read, rated and awarded. If there is any delay with the judging (and I can talk) post a message explaining what has happened and why. This reminds me I must do as I preach because over the past few weeks I fear that I have neglected a few things, but as of today things are going to change. Rejection/Dejection. A contest host can feel rejected and dejected just as much as the entrant. I have an activity in my port, a raffle that has been going on for weeks and I still haven't had any response so I do know how everybody must feel. Promote your contest/activity more often. There are many forms of plugging your contest so go for it especially in the Shameless Plug Page and the Contest Page. A note to all authors is please don't take any rejection to heart, as there are plenty of other contests for look through, and you never know the next contest could be the big winner. Six weeks ago I lost my job and it has become very stressful for me to find another. I have been hunting all over the place (hence the rejection paragraphs) but now that I have had a job interview I am feeling happier and quietly confident that I will hear something soon.
